ART for Parkinson's Disease RESEARCH

100% of the proceeds from this work goes directly to Neuro Challenge Foundation for Parkinson's Research, The Parkinson's Foundation and the Davis Phinney Foundation for Parkinson's. The work below represents a personal journey for both David and I. It has been eight years since David was diagnosed with Parkinson's. And it feels that each day since has been racked with new conflicts and battles. Parkinson's seems to be a slow process; a very methodical destruction of the brain. To me, it all feels so chemical, pathways are closing, dopamine is disappearing, but the person suffering feels the pain, the loss. A cure would seem simple, just fix the parts of the brain that are being destroyed. Add more dopamine and everything will be okay. But obviously it is not so simple. Neuro Challenge Foundation for Parkinson’s, founded in 2008, is a nonprofit organization that annually supports over 3,000 people affected by Parkinson’s disease, free of charge. Neuro Challenge provides personalized care advising, resource referrals, support groups, educational events and therapeutic programs both online and across Southwest Florida, including Sarasota, Manatee, Pinellas, Highlands, Marion, and Charlotte counties. Years ago, I made a series of paintings with black and white circles. It was a way for me to discover my true self. The black circle seems very appropriate in speaking about Parkinson's disease, so it has appeared again in my work. The text paintings are a combination of those circles and writings of David about the disease and how he feels. Parkinson's attacks the body in many ways, and the micro handwriting is an example of that attack. The messages are there but patience is needed by the viewer, as is with the disease.
