SHACK, Jimmy

Jim Shack is a contemporary artist working in Brooklyn, New York. His mediums are painting, collage on paper and oil on canvas, in a style which explores the geometric juxtapositions of architectural, human form and traditional still-life images. Shack has participated in group shows in his native Canada and in New York, including the Nexus Gallery, New York City; The Art Collaborative, New York City; The Brooklyn Artist Open Studio Show, Greenpoint; The Roots Underground Gallery, Toronto; Gallery 76, Toronto; and mdh fine arts, New York City. “My art is an exploration of literal images as symbols, through manipulation of their relationships to each other in abstract and surprising contextual ways. When I place multiple, even disparate images in an unconventional way, and alter perspectives through juxtaposition and layering, t hey take on a new meaning for me. These works are an expression of my own self-discovery, and help me to understand life experiences more deeply. Although my art comes from my own personal vision, I hope the viewer will feel a visceral connection to it through their own memories and experiences. I often work in series, because it enables me to put together a body of work that relates to each other and is a further exploration of this idea of interrelationships. Each piece stands on its own, but is not isolated. My artwork, much like the process of personal self-discovery, involves understanding the whole individual through the prism of a series of evolving experiences and surroundings.” Jim shack graduated from the Ontario College of Art in Toronto in 1986 with a primary course of study in painting and printmaking. After moving to New York in 1987, he continued his artistic work as a painter and began using mixed media on canvas. He continued his artistic development by exploring the field of ceramics through coursework at the Parsons School of Design, Greenwich House Pottery and Chelsea Ceramic Guild, all in New York City.
